Although our fallen soldiers and veterans deserve the utmost respect every day of the year, Memorial Day sets aside some time for Americans to honor them in style. The three-day weekend also marks the first unofficial weekend of summer, and many take the time to go camping with their families or splash around in a local swimming pool. This upcoming Memorial Day weekend is filled with festivals, heartfelt ceremonies and community gatherings — so there is no excuse to miss out! We rounded up some of the best local events in the Akron and Canton area for your convenience. Enjoy your holiday!  

Vintage Canton | Canton

When: Thursday, May 24, 4:30-9:30 pm Where: Market Avenue Vintage Canton

This sophisticated soiree takes place in the heart of downtown Canton and features live music, art exhibits and top-notch wine from all over the world. Enjoy samples from your favorite wineries (or craft beer in the beer garden) and taste bites from the best Stark County restaurants. Vendors this year include Gervasi Vineyard, Nauti Vine Winery, Red Head Wines and so many more!   

Festival Fridays | Louisville

When: Friday, May 25, 5 pm Where: Old Nimishillen Grange

Festival Fridays take place once per month during the summer, but Memorial Day marks the first event of 2018! The event is a fabulous way to celebrate the end of the week and the beginning of a long weekend, and features local vendors, crafts, a beer garden, food trucks, family-friendly activities, a car show and a live performance from Ricky Lee!  

Day Out With Thomas on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad | Peninsula

When: Friday-Sunday, May 25-27, times vary Where: Departing from Boston Mills Brandywine Ski Resort CVSR

Kids will love this specialized train ride in which Thomas the Tank Engine will lead passengers through the Ohio countryside on a magical excursion. Enjoy magic shows, bounce houses, balloon houses, and demonstrations that will teach children everything they want to know about trains.  

The Color Vibe 5K Run | Akron

When: Saturday, May 26, 9 am Where: Lock 3 Park Color Vibe Get ready for the most vibrant, fun-filled run of your life! Run or walk the 5k course through Akron, beginning and ending at Lock 3. Participants will be blasted with colored powder at each station which makes for a bright, beautiful and fun celebration at the finish line. Proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House. Don't miss it!  

Ode to Otters at the Akron Zoo | Akron

When: Saturday, May 26, 8-10 am Where: The Akron Zoo Celebrate everything we love about otters at this fun event! The Akron Zoo will host a special breakfast in honor of the adorable creatures complete with crafts, cookie decorating and (of course) otter appearances. Update: This event has sold out. Try back next year!   

ShakesBEER: Twelfth Night | Akron

When: Saturday, May 26, 8 pm Where: The lobby bar at Greystone Hall ShakesBeer

Brought to you by the Ohio Shakespeare Festival, ShakesBEER provides a lively, quirky and fun-filled take on your favorite Shakespeare plays. On Memorial Day weekend, experience Twelfth Night as you've never experienced it before. Enjoy a pint with the crew (the actors will be drinking right along with you) and a reading of one of this iconic playwright's funniest scripts. Add a dollar to your favorite character's jar and he or she will take a sip.  

Blossom Time Festival and Parade | Chagrin Falls

When: Thursday-Sunday, May 24-28, times vary Where: Various locations Every year, the Chagrin Valley Jaycees throw a spectacular festival over Memorial Day weekend. The event will take place at Riverside Park in the picturesque Chagrin Falls and will include a carnival, food and drink vendors, and plenty of family-friendly activities. Don't miss the grand parade through downtown — a highlight of the festival and one of the most popular parades in the area.  

The Memorial Day Weekend Flea Market | Hartville

When: Thursday-Monday, May 24-28, all day (closed on Sunday) Where: Hartville MarketPlace & Flea Market Memorial Day Flea

Over Memorial Day weekend, the Hartville MarketPlace & Flea Market hosts one of its largest markets of the year! Shop from more than 1,000 local vendors in the indoor/outdoor venue. There will also be food and beverages to refuel when you need a break from wandering!  

Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony | Canton

When: Monday, May 18, 10 am Where: Timken High School The annual Memorial Day parade will begin at 10 am and will wind from Timken High School through town to Monument Park. Afterward, stay for a beautiful ceremony to honor fallen military members at the McKinley National Memorial.    

Memorial Day Breakfast, Parade, Ceremony + Car Show | Green

When: Monday, May 28, 7 am-3 pm Where: The Green High School Parking Lot Fuel up with a free pancake breakfast at Fire Station #1 before Memorial Day festivities in Green! You will definitely need your energy. Following breakfast, the Memorial Day parade will begin and end at the Green High School Parking lot, winding its way through town with colorful floats, an abundance of American flags and more. Afterward, head over to the Veterans Memorial Park for the memorial ceremony honoring fallen soldiers and veterans. A free community picnic and antique car show will take place after the ceremony!
